Phat10 – 4 weeks from now!

OMG! Once again, Phatness is about to descend upon Inangahua Junction. Acts such as Marky, Hype, Pendulum, Klute, Spor, BSE, Upbeats, Skream, Benga, Kryptic Minds, Concord Dawn, State of Mind, Kora….and plenty more!

I’m gonna be there VJing, plans for now are for me to take the reigns over Upbeats/Hype when the year changes from ‘09 to ‘10, and continue on through the night.

The rest of the crew down there are Aucklands Durty Movie (B-Movie and Durtymac) and another VJ from Wellington, VJ UJI.

We are going to be a lot more techincally advanced than previous years, and we have all been putting mega work in, so I hope those of you heading down enjoy the show!

Argh!! Macbook Pro Graphics Card Failure

Just a quick note of the issues I’ve had today on my macbook pro, and this may be some help to others.

Today while watching some media, the screen just went all glitchy, and wouldnt respond, the beach ball of death occasionally whirring.

Restarted, mac worked fine, then about 10 mins later, same screen crash.

After that the damn thing wouldnt reboot past this messsage.ARGGH!!

I restarted the mac in verbose mode (holding down Command-V) and it stopped when it said

So yeah, whatever that means, apparently its the command that worked just before the graphics all start to load in boot up. So the problem is with the graphics.

I found this thread on the net, and followed the post by wolfiger to remove the graphics card extensions, however, while the mac seemed to work fine from now, it meant that i was unable to use the graphics card – or at least VDMX wouldn’t load! Which is no good if i need to do stuff like, I don’t know, visuals for new years at Phat.

I booted up the Apple Hardware Test (holding D when I had the install disk in) and it found an error with the Graphics card.

‘4VDC/1/40000003: VideoController’

Shit.

Apparently though, its (hopefully) a problem with the exact card I have, an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT, around the exact time i bought it. (July 2007)

I’m taking it into Magnum Mac tomorrow, and will see how I go. Hopefully this can be dealt with swiftly and with no cost.

The main reason I was inspired to VJ was when I saw a guy called Aaron Beck doing his thing with VHS and his custom animations at events such as Friday the 13th and Alpine Unity near the start of the decade.

I was just in awe with how a person was putting images on screen that would add so much emotion to music that was already overwhelming me.
