RSI Prevention Breaks for Mac
Prevent repetitive strain injury with enforced wrist and hand stretch breaks. OptiBreak reminds you every 30 minutes to stretch your wrists, hands and forearms.
Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is one of the most common occupational health problems for anyone who works at a computer. OptiBreak schedules enforced wrist and hand stretch breaks every 30 minutes — breaks you can't dismiss, skip, or forget about.
What Is RSI?
Repetitive strain injury is an umbrella term for pain and damage caused by repetitive movements and overuse. For computer workers, it typically affects the wrists, hands, forearms, elbows, and shoulders. Common forms include carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, and de Quervain's tenosynovitis.
The insidious thing about RSI is that it develops gradually. By the time you notice persistent pain, the damage has been accumulating for weeks or months. Prevention is far easier than treatment — and regular micro-stretches are one of the most effective preventive measures.
Why Regular Stretch Breaks Matter
When you type or use a mouse, the tendons in your wrists and forearms make thousands of small repetitive movements per hour. Without breaks, these tendons become inflamed and the surrounding tissue swells, compressing nerves and causing pain, tingling, or numbness.
Research published in the Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation found that workers who took regular micro-breaks to stretch had significantly lower rates of musculoskeletal discomfort. Even 60 seconds of targeted stretching every 30 minutes can make a meaningful difference.
The Problem With Reminders
You've probably tried setting a timer or using a notification-based app to remind you to stretch. And you've probably dismissed every single one. When you're deep in work, a gentle notification is no match for the pull of your current task.
This is especially dangerous with RSI because the stretches feel unnecessary in the moment — your wrists don't hurt yet. By the time they do, you're already dealing with an injury that could take weeks to heal.
How OptiBreak Prevents RSI
OptiBreak's RSI Prevention break activates every 30 minutes with a 60-second full-screen lockout. During this time, you're guided to stretch your wrists, hands, and forearms. You can't click through it, Cmd+Tab past it, or dismiss it.
- Full-screen takeover across all monitors — no escape routes
- Clear instructions for targeted wrist and hand stretches
- 60 seconds is enough time for a meaningful stretch without breaking your flow
- Smart scheduling avoids overlap with your other break types
- Streak tracking helps you build a consistent prevention habit
Exercises During Your RSI Break
During your 60-second RSI prevention break, try these stretches:
- Wrist extensions: Extend your arm, palm up, and gently pull your fingers back with the other hand. Hold for 15 seconds each side.
- Fist clenches: Make a tight fist, hold for 5 seconds, then spread your fingers wide. Repeat 5 times.
- Wrist circles: Rotate both wrists slowly in circles, 10 times in each direction.
- Forearm stretch: Press your palms together in front of your chest, elbows out, and lower your hands until you feel the stretch. Hold for 15 seconds.
Don't Wait for Pain
RSI prevention is a habit, not a reaction. By the time your wrists hurt, you're already behind. OptiBreak makes prevention automatic — every 30 minutes, without fail, whether you're in the zone or not.
